Viniyoga is a traditional style of yoga as transmitted by T. Krishnamacharya and TKV Desikachar to Gary Kraftsow. The teachings offered through Gary, his teachers and his students prioritize the practitioner over the technique by making use of modification, adaptation and personalization. Viniyoga honors the science of Yoga by offering its students tailored practices that make Yoga available to anyone with a breath.
Students can expect a breath-centered practice that places special emphasis on the health of the spine and self-observation to recognize patterns and discern their service to the individual. The approach is therapeutic from the start – promoting strength and stability of both body and mind. Viniyoga practitioners experience the dynamics of movement through the intimacy of their breath. Through practices that may integrate asana, pranayama, bandha, sound, chanting, meditation, prayer and ritual, Viniyoga students find themselves understanding the true purpose of Yoga—learning to enjoy the peace of their place in the world.
The Viniyoga approach to back care is evidence-based, derived from our highly acclaimed study with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in 2005. Further studies into the effectiveness of the Viniyoga approach to stress reduction resulted in the CEO of Aetna offering company-wide access to Viniyoga classes.
The San Diego Yoga scene thrives. On every corner at certain times of day, someone is carrying a Yoga mat. What a beautiful sight. These folks are taking time from their schedules to commit to a pursuit of calm and wellbeing. This I will always celebrate. It’s time to deepen our knowledge of the system of Yoga so we can better know ourselves. Viniyoga is the most comprehensive and accessible teaching into this tradition that I’ve encountered in 25 years of devoted Yoga practice. It is also the most authentic. I’m grateful to my teachers for their careful transmission of this wisdom. I’m honored and humbled by every opportunity to share it.
